Recently, I was informed of an internship at the Portland Art Museum within the curatorial department. After reading a great deal of articles and books on museum librarianship I am inspired to apply for this position. Basically, if you want to work in a museum as an information professional, it is best to gain some experience in a practical way since courses offered in this field are rare (as I previously mentioned).
The book Art Museum Libraries and Librarianship also points this out in the chapter which discusses museum volunteers and interns. The position as an intern or volunteer not only benefits the library and museum, but it can serve as an excellent learning tool for those who are interested in museum librarianship.
This book is a useful reference; it gives essays on all areas of museum librarianship from a multitude of perspectives and museum libraries around the world.
