During the course Global Issues in Librarianship I had the opportunity to travel to the Ukraine and then develop a service plan that was responsive to the environment, culture, and available resources in post-Soviet Ukraine.
I devised a brief three-year plan for preservation and conservation assessment in the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy Library. During our service-learning trip to Kyiv I found, through observation and group discussions with practicing and future librarians, that rare book collections are at risk of deteriorating at an alarming rate. There is often a lack of preservation and conservation efforts for reasons out of institutional control. This project and experience both demonstrate my desire and ability to establish positive working relationships and share ideas cross-culturally with other library professionals in order to evolve as an international information network.
